    GERD/reflux relief: I began taking Sodium Alginate as an alternative treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD]. After 2 years on prescription-strength proton pump inhibitors, they ceased working. I'm generally skeptical of "alternative remedies". However, the National Institute of Health [NIH] has published numerous studies on the efficacy of sodium alginate for treating GERD. Taken after meals, it forms a gelatinous "raft" over one's stomach contents, preventing it from going back up the esophagus. Be sure to give the capsule enough time to dissolve before lying down to sleep. Also, the capsule must be the last thing consumed before going to sleep.
